SIAMESE SKULLS CYANOTYPE Framed 5x7 inches
SIAMESE SKULLS CYANOTYPE Framed 5x7 inches
ARTWORK DETAILS
Framed 5x7 inch handmade cyanotype of siamese skulls with moths on foreheads. This image is from a painting I made that has been turned into a cyanotype! The process involved printing my painting on a transparency, placing the transparency on paper treated with cyanotype solution, brought outside to sit in the sun, rinsed in water/hydrogen peroxide bath, hung to dry, signed with gold pen, then framed.
What is a Cyanotype?
Invented by Sir John Herschel in 1841, this simple process produces a continuous tone image of Prussian Blue using a sensitizing solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. These iron salts, when exposed to natural or artificial ultraviolet light, are reduced to their ferrous state, producing a high contrast blue image when oxidized. Oxidation is hastened by immersion in running water, which also washed away the unused iron salts. (via Science and Media Museum)
CARE AND DISPLAY
Direct sunlight can cause most art to fade, including cyanotypes. Super humid atmospheres like bathrooms can also cause moisture to accumulate behind the glass which may damage the artwork.
